The underlying values of the Green Flag Program reflect the larger, holistic concept of environmental stewardship. One tenet fundamental to many religions is that the Creator formed the world, entrusting to humankind the care of the earth and all forms of life. As stewards of creation, we recognize the connection between humans and all forms of life in our global environment. As stewards we seek to ensure that others may experience the blessing of creation from generation to generation, in perpetuity. The Green Flag Program gives students the opportunity to become stewards of the earth through investigation and action in their schools. By examining their school and community to find and solve environmental problems, students are taking an active role in protecting creation. Faith-based groups the world over are increasingly recognizing the direct connection between human action and environmental impact. If future generations are to benefit from creation, we must all take intentional actions with concern for the planet. The Green Flag Program is a great way to instill caring values in young people that promote a healthier existence for all creatures on earth. By solving environmental problems to achieve safer and healthier school environments, young people learn about the connection between how humans affect the environment, and how earth-conscious actions can create a positive change. Most importantly, the Green Flag Program empowers teachers, parents and community leaders to protect our children – priceless yet vulnerable members of the human family. Unfortunately, children’s environmental health is often neglected in the school environment. In most schools across the country, little is known about common school contaminates, and so little policy exists to protect children from environmental hazards. Poor indoor air quality, toxic pesticides, hazardous cleaning products, diesel fumes – all these and more threaten the health and well-being of children in schools today. The Green Flag Program engages school communities with these issues, and provides them with the tools they need to pass protective policies and protect their children from harm. The Green Flag Program is open to public and private schools of all faiths and grade levels. The time has come for stewardship. The time has come for action. The time has come for us, peoples of faith, to join together to advance positive environmental change in our schools and for our children. |
